The following is a list of times we know without a doubt that a ghost in our house touched or moved something, or has flat out stolen it from us.
I’ve talked about all
of these elsewhere on the blog except the most recent one. Being a sensible
person, I of course will not list the times someone misplaced their keys or
can’t remember one season to the next where the heck their gloves are. I am
only talking about the times a ghost reached out and touched, moved or had taken
something. We know without a doubt this is what happened as absolutely no other
explanation could be found (trust me, we looked) and then there is the fact
that the house is definitely haunted.
I will attempt to
keep the encounters brief. I get it. You’re busy. You want the condensed
version or if you are already familiar, you might just want a little reminder
that this stuff actually goes on. But I have to present all the facts so each
event might be longer than you like. As far as I can recollect, I will start
with the oldest known (to me) incident.
Around the year 2000,
while wallpapering the largest upstairs bedroom, not only did I see an unknown
spectre in the hallway watching me work (plain as day) but things I was using
during the great wallpapering endeavor went missing more than once, but only when
I left the room and came back. I recall scissors and a yardstick disappearing
on separate occasions when I left the room. I kept them in the same spot for
ease of use but they would often not be there, or anywhere, if I left the room
for even a minute. After retreating downstairs for more scissors and
yardsticks, when I went back to the bedroom, there were the originals on the
bed, in plain sight. Other than my mother who very rarely climbed stairs
anymore, no one else was in the house. Conclusion: a ghost, possibly the one
watching me from the hallway, picked up the scissors and yardstick, took them
to God knows where, then brought them back.
Around the same time
as the missing scissors and yardstick shenanigans, my mother, husband and son
and I had been in the living room one evening watching a movie. No one else was
in the house. We heard a tremendous crash from the dining room and upon
investigating found a shelf with a large amount of little vases on it had been
pulled off the wall on one side so all the vases slid to the floor. The
hardware holding the shelf up was still there in the wall in perfect condition.
But it appeared someone had unhooked the one end of the shelf causing
everything on it to go crashing down. Lots were broken unfortunately. All the
living people were in the next room watching tv and not to blame.
Somewhere in the
ballpark of 2008, my son was at the house visiting his grandmother for the
weekend. When I arrived to pick him up, one of his video games was missing. He
searched everywhere but it was nowhere to be found. Around the same time, my
mother’s reading glasses which she always kept in the kitchen, were also
suddenly missing. My son came home without his game and we assumed it might
eventually turn up somewhere. My mother called the next day to say when she
walked into the dining room, the game and glasses were laying
right on the floor. Conclusion: the klepto ghost struck again, grabbing things
that aren’t his. At least he brought them back.
It was 2012 and we
were visiting my mother at the house. My cell phone which I had laid on the
kitchen table was not there when we were getting ready to leave. We did a quick
search around the kitchen but it was nowhere to be found. My son sent a text to
the missing phone and it pinged from the dining room, in a coat pocket. Not my
coat and I had not even been in there with my phone. All those present swore
they had nothing to do with the misplaced phone.
Also in 2012, my
mother, who lived alone, heard a loud sound in her dining room. She went to
check it out and saw nothing to account for the sound, But she did find
something unusual: a series of six books she kept on a bookshelf with an
elastic band around them, were now spread out on the floor in numerical order.
And then there is the
super creepy incident involving my son, Scott’s favorite sneakers which
disappeared from the face of the earth (literally) in 2016 and then they were
returned to him in 2018. Torn apart and dirty but nonetheless, he did get
them back. Conclusion: clearIy, an entity picked up Scott’s brand new sneakers
where he took them off by the front door, and went to wherever it is ghosts go,
wore the literal hell right out of them during which they managed to get ground
inside of them and then brought them back, leaving them in an odd place for
Scott to find one day. Sounds insane but it is all true. I can’t do that event
justice with a few sentences so here is the link:
I’ve had two incidents where I felt a cold breeze on me out of nowhere in a place where there were no cold breezes blowing. I also felt an invisible finger touch me some years ago. When you live in a haunted house and feel something like that and examine all possibilities of why it’s happening, once you rule out the sensible causes, you are left with: ghosts.
The first time I felt
the cold air was about a year and a half ago. I was painting woodwork between
the dining room and a hallway when very suddenly what I can only describe as a
rushing of ice cold air came right over me. No, it was not winter. In fact it
was a very warm spring day. No, I was not sick and having cold chills. I did
have a fan nearby but it was not pointed directly at me. No windows were open. I
was happily painting along when it felt like a 3 second blast of Arctic air
passed through me.
The second cold air
incident was about a year ago. One night when I was reading in bed, I felt a
very light wisp of cool air blowing on my arm for several seconds. A couple of
unexplained noises in the bedroom preceded this incident. There were no fans on
and the bedroom window was shut. I looked around me and the room as it was
happening but could not see anything out of the ordinary. About a week before
this, I had accidentally captured the voice of an unknown entity on an audio
recording, so it’s possible the blowing air on my arm and the voice are from
the same spirit.
The invisible finger
that touched me was during a family dinner at the house some years ago. I felt
it on my leg while everyone was halfway through the meal. At the exact same
time, my niece was sitting next to me and became very startled saying something
was moving her chair. Of course, there were no people under the table (or pets)
but “something” was there, sliding its finger very noticeably up my leg and
moving my niece’s chair. I looked under the table cloth but nothing was
visible. Did it feel different than if a person had touched me? Absolutely not.
It felt exactly like a live person’s finger on my leg but there was no live
person to account for it.
In February 2025, a
plastic bag of hairdressing items completely disappeared. I always kept it in
one place all the time and it was always there when I went to use it. Until the
day that it wasn’t. Around this same time, a certain coffee mug also
disappeared into thin air. On the counter one minute. Completely gone literally
the next minute. As of this writing (June 2026), both items are still missing.
Had we temporarily lost our minds and put the items in a different place, they
would have rematerialized by now. They have not.
What is it with
ghosts and coffee mugs? They are relentless with moving and/or taking them. Are
they easy for them to pick up because they have a handle? I have no idea but
other dishware and glasses do not seem to be affected very often.
In March 2026, I was
packing up some dishes from my antique china cabinet in preparation of
refinishing it. I had packed all of the delicate drinking glasses into a box
and stepped away for a moment. When I came back into the room, one of the
glasses I had already packed was now sitting up on top of my fireplace. I didn’t
put it there. My cat can do a lot of things but he can’t do that.
The most recent
incident of a ghost touching or moving something was about two weekends ago. I
have a rule in my kitchen that the white cell phone charging cord must never
leave the plug it is plugged into 24 hours a day. The last thing I need to do
is hunt throughout this giant house when I need to charge my phone. Therefore,
that white cord is designated as the kitchen charger and is never moved. This
rule is strictly followed. This cord also has a little on/off switch. So on
this particular day two weeks ago, I unplugged my phone, triple checked the
switch was off and Shaun and I both left the house. I was the last one out the
door. Hours later we came home. The cord was now on the dining room table. I
knew Shaun did not have time to move the cord as I was the last one out the
door and the last one to touch it in the kitchen but I did ask him anyway. He
swore he knew nothing of how it got on the dining room table. As I mentioned,
the cat can do a lot of things, but unplugging cords and moving them to
different rooms isn’t one of them.
Previously, I had a
written a whole blog post just about the doors in this house. How ghosts love
to open them, close them, slam them, knock on them. It’s one of their favorite
things to do. To do any of those things, they need to somehow touch them so I
have to include them in this list.
This is likely not an
exhaustive list. Quite a few family members have lived here over the years and
it’s impossible for me to know every single incident when a ghost helped themselves
to people’s things. I just know without a doubt that it does happen.
Just for fun, check out a previous post detailing which cemeteries, churches and hospitals are haunted in Nova Scotia.
