Our homestead ghosts have been unbelievably
quiet lately. Maybe they are lurking about without being noticed or have
vacated to a warmer climate this time of year. So I don’t have much to report
on since the last blog post in November 2025, except for a couple of incidents
that were rather interesting.
Incidentally, we now have a ghost cam
running continually in our large walk-in attic which is known to be an active
area. I can check in on it any time and I am hoping with all my might that
something materializes on camera but no luck so far. There were previous times
when I would be in the kitchen and no one was upstairs and I could hear someone
walking overhead. Now I can immediately check the camera on my phone and see if
ghostly evidence is presenting itself. Fingers crossed for that.
The first recent incident occurred upstairs
one day in early January of this year when I happened to be home alone. I was
in the bedroom mid-afternoon and Winston was with me curled up in his bed. The
bedroom door was half closed. The house was quiet—no tv or music on. Very
clearly from the hallway, I heard a sighing sound coming from just outside my
bedroom. It was definitely a female-sounding sigh. No footsteps. No floorboards
creaking. Just a very weary sigh. I looked at Winston who was looking at me,
alarmed, as he is pretty bright and gets concerned when he knows it is just the
two of us but suddenly sounds indicate we are no longer alone. I went over to
the door, half hoping the spectre of an 1800s-era former resident would be in
my upstairs hallway. But no. Nothing could be seen and there were no more sighs
or voices of any kind.
Life went on. We have been constantly
renovating the haunted homestead for almost 3 years now. Something somewhere is
either torn apart or undergoing refinishing or replacement at any given time. A
few weeks ago I decided it was high time to makeover the built in china cabinet
in the dining room. If you follow me on Facebook, you probably saw the pictures
of the before and after and if you read the comments, I did briefly mention the
ghostly encounter I had when starting this project.
My mother’s, grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s
antique dishes are kept in this cabinet. The main claim to fame of this cabinet
is that during the Halifax Explosion in 1917, my grandmother reported that the
dishes rattled from the force of the blast which was about 100 kms away. One
cannot talk about the china cabinet without getting that little interesting
fact in there.
Over the years, my mother often talked
about smelling her mother’s perfume whenever she would take the dishes out to
give it a good yearly cleaning. So I guess there is some attachment to the
cabinet and the antique dishes by previous generations.
Obviously the first step in the cabinet
restoration was to pack up all of the fragile antique dishes and stow them away
temporarily. I had cardboard boxes and vast amounts of paper in which to wrap
each item and one Saturday in January I started packing them up. I had put
quite a dent into the packing and had laid the last delicate drinking glass in
a box and was about to move onto the plates, when I stopped to step away into
the kitchen for a moment. I was gone no more than two minutes.
Imagine my surprise when I came back to
continue and one of the previously-packed glasses was now standing up on top of
my fireplace mantle, with the wrapping paper half hanging off it. I know
without a doubt I didn’t put it there. I was methodically taking a glass,
wrapping it and putting it straight into the box. But there it was.
I thanked whoever was trying to help from
the afterlife but also explained they were doing the opposite of what should be
done and the glasses should actually stay in the box.
Nothing else transpired after that. When
the cabinet was finished and it was time to put the glasses and dishes back
again, no one showed up to help. Typical.
I have two “semi” updates to provide on
previous blog posts.
If you recall, in February of 2025. I had
reported about how a bag of stuff and a cup of coffee both disappeared into
thin air. Due to previous incidents where things disappeared and sometimes
reappeared we attributed this to ghostly activity. It is now one year later and
neither item has come back.
You can read about that incident here: LINK
They were quite successful but are still
reviewing their vast amount of footage. The final results of the investigation
will be presented in the near future so stay tuned for that. Please ensure you
follow the group Facebook page so you don’t miss any future posts!
